President Aleksandar Vucic recently announced that Serbia could potentially begin exploiting lithium reserves as early as 2028. This statement comes after receiving new assurances from both Australian mining giant Rio Tinto and the European Union regarding the controversial mining project in Jadar, western Serbia. The region is said to hold one of Europe’s largest lithium reserves, a critical component for the production of electric vehicle batteries.
In 2022, the Serbian government paused the mining project due to environmental and public health concerns raised by protests. Critics accused Rio Tinto and Vucic of lacking transparency and failing to disclose environmental impact reports. However, the situation seems to be evolving, as both the mining company and the EU have provided new guarantees regarding compliance with environmental standards. President Vucic emphasized the importance of meeting all requirements to ensure the safe operation of the mine.
Vucic highlighted the significant impact that the lithium mine could have on Serbia and the broader region. The projected annual production of 58,000 tonnes of lithium would account for 17% of electric vehicle production in Europe, equivalent to approximately 1.1 million cars. This scale of production could potentially revolutionize the country’s economy and position it as a key player in the electric vehicle market.
Responding to Criticisms
Rio Tinto released an environmental impact report to address concerns raised by opponents of the project. The report emphasized the use of safe and proven technology to mitigate any potential risks to water resources, soil, biodiversity, air quality, and human health. The company denounced what they deemed as a misinformation campaign aimed at discrediting the project with unsubstantiated claims.
Strategic Partnerships and Future Plans
In September 2023, Serbia signed a letter of intent with the European Commission to establish a strategic partnership in the production of batteries and raw materials. This agreement aligns with the country’s ambitions to become a prominent supplier in the electric vehicle industry. As discussions progress, it will be crucial for all stakeholders to collaborate effectively to ensure the responsible development of the lithium mining project.
