Boeing’s new CEO, Kelly Ortberg, has expressed his intention to reset relations with the key union representing tens of thousands of its workers. In a message to the aerospace giant’s employees, Ortberg stated his commitment to reaching a new labor contract that will benefit both parties.

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, consisting of two local branches representing around 33,000 Boeing employees in the Seattle area, has demanded a pay hike of at least 40 percent over three years. Additionally, they are seeking better benefits including improvements in health insurance and pensions. The current labor agreement, in place for 16 years, is set to expire soon, and union members have voted in favor of strike action if a new agreement is not reached by September 12.

Ortberg acknowledges the need to move forward and rebuild trust between Boeing and the union. While he cannot change the past, he is focused on working towards a common ground for a prosperous future for both the employees and the company. The union’s demand for manufacturing Boeing’s next aircraft in the region is a key point of contention that is being addressed in the negotiations.

Taking over as CEO from Dave Calhoun, Ortberg is stepping into a challenging role at a time when Boeing is facing various quality control issues. With a fresh perspective and a commitment to open communication, Ortberg is actively engaging with key stakeholders, including union representatives, to address concerns and find resolutions beneficial to all parties involved.

As contract negotiations enter the final phase, both Boeing and the union are working towards a mutually beneficial agreement that will set the tone for their future relationship. Ortberg’s emphasis on collaboration and transparency is a positive step towards realizing a harmonious and productive working environment for all employees.
