Intuitive Machines, a US company, has achieved a significant milestone in space exploration by successfully landing its Odysseus lunar lander on the Moon’s surface. Described as a white-knuckle ride, the lander had to decelerate from a velocity of 1.8 kilometers per second after traveling a vast distance of 400,000 kilometers across space. The precision required for this landing was crucial, as the lander had to come to a full stop autonomously with pin-point accuracy.

After the communications were cut as the lander slowed down to land, the mission control team had to endure fifteen long minutes of tense silence before receiving any confirmation of the landing. During this time, troubleshooting malfunctions and resolving issues prior to descent were the only actions that could be taken by the team. The suspenseful wait finally came to an end when a faint signal was heard, indicating the successful delivery of the order to the Moon.

The lunar lander, affectionately nicknamed ‘Odie’ by its team, landed in an impact crater named Malapart A, approximately 300 kilometers from the lunar south pole. Leading up to the landing, there were challenges faced, including a malfunction in the laser-guidance system. However, NASA’s payloads included in the mission came to the rescue, with an operational lidar successfully guiding the lander to its destination.

The successful landing of Odysseus signifies a return to the Moon for the US after over half a century since the Apollo program missions. With the rise of companies like Space X and Blue Origin, the landscape of space exploration is shifting towards commercial ventures. Intuitive Machines, founded in 2013, is among the companies selected by NASA to participate in government-funded programs. This achievement marks the first of many upcoming missions by the company.
