Robots with wheels have shown great potential in navigating various indoor and outdoor environments, offering the ability to travel longer distances with fewer risks of losing balance. However, a common limitation faced by wheeled robots is their inability to reliably overcome steps or uneven terrains. This limitation restricts their real-world applications, as they may get stuck on a step and fail to complete their missions.

Research and Development

Recently, researchers at Kyushu Institute of Technology have made a breakthrough in addressing this limitation by developing a new rimless wheel-based robot with elastic, telescopic legs. This unique design allows the robot to better navigate environments with steps and uneven terrains by producing a walking-like locomotion style instead of a conventional rolling motion. The researchers, Yuta Hanazawa, Yuhi Uchino, and Shinichi Sagara, conducted numerical studies and simulations to determine the optimal elasticity for the legs to reliably overcome steps.

The team fabricated a prototype of their rimless wheel robot and conducted a series of real-world experiments to test its performance. The robot demonstrated the ability to overcome a 0.03m step rapidly without getting stuck or losing balance. These promising results showcase the potential for this innovative design to revolutionize the field of wheeled robotics.

In their future studies, Hanazawa, Uchino, and Sagara plan to further test and enhance their robot’s performance. They aim to improve its control, reduce power consumption, and adapt the design to create a one-wheeled robot that can smoothly move in confined spaces. The development of this new rimless wheel robot could serve as inspiration for other roboticists to explore similar designs, leading to the creation of more versatile wheeled robots for a wide range of applications.

The advancement of rimless wheel robots marks a significant step forward in the field of robotics, offering the potential to overcome obstacles such as steps and uneven terrains. Through innovative design and rigorous testing, researchers have demonstrated the feasibility of developing wheeled robots with enhanced capabilities and adaptability. As the research progresses, the possibilities for the application of rimless wheel robots continue to expand, paving the way for future advancements in robotic technology.
