In the summer of 2018, the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) initiated an investigation into a report of a woman who tested positive for HIV after receiving a facial procedure at an unlicensed spa. The procedure, commonly known as a vampire facial, involves the separation of platelets from a patient’s blood and reinjecting them into the skin using microneedling. Despite the lack of scientific evidence supporting its benefits, the procedure claims to accelerate healing and reduce aging-related blemishes.
By the spring of 2023, the NMDOH had identified four female clients of the spa and a male sexual partner of one of the women who tested positive for HIV. One of the clients, who had received a vampire facial in 2018, was hospitalized three years later with an illness associated with AIDS. The investigation revealed several unsanitary practices at the spa, including storing blood and injectables in a kitchen refrigerator alongside food, and using unwrapped syringes for procedures.
One of the most alarming aspects of this case was the lack of regulation in the spa. Practitioners in the US are required to have a medical license to perform procedures involving blood separation and reinjection. However, the spa owner did not have any of the mandated licenses, nor did they keep adequate client records. This lack of documentation not only hindered the investigation but also made it difficult to determine the full extent of the infections.
As a result of their illegal practices, spa owner Maria de Lourdes Ramos De Ruiz pleaded guilty to five counts of practicing medicine without a license in 2022. This resulted in a jail sentence and a requirement to pay restitution to those infected. The case serves as a cautionary tale for both practitioners and clients in the beauty industry, highlighting the importance of strict regulation and oversight to protect public health.
