The Chinguetti meteorite has captured the attention of researchers for over a century. The smaller fragment of this stony-iron rock was discovered in 1916 atop a massive 100-meter-wide iron mountain in Africa. Despite numerous attempts, the larger parent meteorite has never been found. Now, a team of scientists from Imperial College London and the University of Oxford are determined to unravel this mystery using magnetic anomaly maps to locate the elusive iron mountain.
The Curious Discovery by Captain Ripert
French consular official Captain Gaston Ripert claimed to have been blindfolded and led to the ‘iron hill’ by a local chieftain where he found the meteorite. This smaller chunk was named after the nearby city of Chinguetti in Mauritania. Numerous expeditions since the 1916 discovery have failed to locate the original site. A 2001 study suggested that the fragment could not have originated from a meteorite larger than 1.6 meters in diameter based on chemical analysis.
The absence of an impact crater led to speculation that the meteorite may have entered the Earth at a low angle. Previous searches may have been unsuccessful due to sand covering the iron mountain, inaccurate instruments, or incorrect search locations. The researchers considered Captain Ripert’s description of metallic ‘needles’ on the hill, possibly Thomson structures of nickel-iron, as a key feature. Using advanced technology such as digital elevation models and radar data, they have narrowed down potential search areas.

Despite their efforts, the researchers have faced challenges in obtaining aeromagnetic survey data from Mauritania’s Ministry of Petroleum Energy and Mines. An alternative approach of conducting a physical search on foot is being considered, but it could be a time-consuming process. The researchers acknowledge that if the expedition proves fruitless, the mystery of Ripert’s story and the peculiar features of the meteorite would remain unresolved.
