In a recent report published in The Lancet Planetary Health by an international research team, including scientists from The Australian National University (ANU), it has been highlighted that the future sustainability of our planet is at risk unless there are drastic transformations in economic systems and technologies. The report emphasizes the need for critical resources to be utilized more fairly in order to ensure a basic standard of living for everyone. The Earth Commission, comprised of globally esteemed interdisciplinary scholars, has identified cities and businesses as key players in becoming stewards of critical Earth systems by reducing their environmental impact.

The Safe and Just Earth System Boundaries report, published in Nature last year, revealed that the planet has already exceeded many of the vital limits that are necessary for both human and planetary well-being. Lead author, Distinguished Professor Xuemei Bai from ANU, stressed the importance of companies and cities in driving significant transformations to alleviate pressure on the planet. Professor Stuart Bunn from Griffith University added that despite the strain on the planet’s ability to provide and protect, there is still hope for addressing poverty and harm caused by Earth’s system change with urgent action.

Looking towards the future, the researchers warn that if urgent transformations are not implemented by 2050, Earth’s climate will continue to deteriorate, leaving no safe and just space for humanity. This means that even if access to basic resources for a standard living is ensured, the planet will still be operating beyond its climate boundary. The looming risk of crossing dangerous tipping points in Earth systems poses a significant threat to global populations, highlighting the critical need for immediate action.

The report lays out a series of recommendations to guide policymakers, businesses, civil society, and communities towards a more sustainable future. Collaboration among these sectors is crucial in advocating for changes in economic structures and policies that address inequality while reducing pressure on nature and climate. Efficient management, sharing, and usage of resources at all levels of society are also essential, emphasizing the need to address the disparities in resource access. Additionally, investment in sustainable and affordable technologies is highlighted as a key strategy to facilitate the reopening of a safe and just space for all individuals.

The urgency for transformative change to ensure a safe and just Earth cannot be emphasized enough. It is imperative that all sectors of society come together to address the challenges posed by unsustainable practices and exploitation of critical resources. By working towards a more equitable and sustainable future, we can pave the way for a better tomorrow for both humanity and the planet.
